Proterra Builders, Inc. furnishes and installs generators that are powered by diesel, natural gas or liquid propane gas. Sometime this entails removing the existing generator. Sometimes this requires a new concrete pad, sometimes a gas line, or a tank with a pad. It always requires modification to the existing switchgear and installation of an automatic transfer switch or manual transfer switch. Nearly always the generator will be protected with concrete filled bollards and a fence (chain link or wrought iron). We’ve even installed engines that provide backup for a water pump through the use of a drive axle and clutch. Supervising multiple trades is where our general engineering or general building expertise surpasses that of a specialty contractor.
Increasingly, the electric grid, whether PG&E or SoCal Edison experiences brown outs or blackouts and our clients find it necessary to provide some kind of backup emergency power to compensate for loss of primary power. Even natural disasters like fire or weather can cause primary power to fail at any moment. Our clients are mostly state, county, municipal or water districts. We are a federally certified veteran enterprise (CVE) so we can work also on federal projects.
Proterra Builders, Inc. is licensed to supervise multiple trades; whereas the Contractors State License Board does not allow Specialty Contractors to do this.
Proterra Builders, Inc. is superlative at project management including submittals, requests for information, scheduling, tracking progress, and conceptual estimating.
Since Proterra Builders, Inc. is a microbusiness, we are agile and we quickly respond to client requests.
Proterra Builders, Inc. swapped out two (2) MTU 650 HP engines at an active fish hatchery in Big Pine CA, which prevented any down time for supplying water to the fish population.
Department of Fish and Wildlife had 40 year old engines providing backup services to the two pumps supplying water to the fish hatchery. Each engine was sequentially removed, the electrical system updated/modernized, and the mounting included an exhaust system, a drive drain and a clutch calibrated to within 4/1000 of an inch. We thoroughly cleaned and rinsed each existing 1000 gallon diesel convault and provided new diesel fuel.

Proterra Builders, Inc. designed, furnished and installed one (1) Kohler 40kW liquid propane generator at a remolte California Highway Patrol outpost in Bodega Bay CA.
CHP wanted to leverage their existing contracts for LPG so we designed one that included one (1) 500 gallon above ground storage tank with concomitant fuel line and underground electrical to a new automatic transfer switch and switchgear modification. Both the generator and tank had their own concrete pads. Our electrical engineer, which we work with closely designed the project.

Proterra Builders, Inc. designed, furnished and installed one (1) 500kW Generac generator with a 1000 gallon diesel belly tank for Toiyabe Indian Health Project, Inc. on the Bishop Paiute tribal lands.
Toiyabe needed a backup emergency generator to protect their dialysis center. We analyzed their power usage and sourced a sufficiently sized generator including an automatic transfer switch and concrete pad. The existing switchgear could not easily be modified due to space constraints so we added one new cabinet and modified load power into the new cabinet and looped it back through the ATS to the existing cabinet. We relocated the 1600A GFI breaker with CT analyzer to the new cabinet. The design included electrical engineering and structural calculations for the concrete pad.

Proterra Builders, Inc. furnished and installed one (1) Generac 150kW natural gas generator to provide emergency backup power for Water Well No. 1 in Tulare CA.
Self Help Enterprises needed to provide backup emergency power to the only water well serving the Okieville community. We installed a new underground gas line and gas manifold to a new gas meter. We also installed a new concrete pad and modified the existing switchgear adding a manual transfer switch and low voltage controls for alarm detection and signal. We made code upgrades to satisfy the County Fire Marshall.

In a design-build scenario we will analyze power usage to properly size an emergency generator. We then review the submittal for approval, design the electrical modifications and provide calculations for a concrete pad. We then furnish and install the concrete pad, allow it to cure, then install the generator and transfer switch and make the electrical modifications. In a design-bid-build scenario the engineer has already designed the project. We use subcontractors that are prequalified to perform the work. We pay them quickly and build a lasting relationship in order to get the most competitive pricing. We install the concrete pad, allow it to cure, and then furnish and install the generator and make the electrical modifications.
